Developmental mathematics courses are designed for students who are not yet ready to enroll in a college-level mathematics course. Eastern offers three developmental mathematics courses to help fit the needs of our students. Placement in these courses will depend on students’ current math skills.
Basic Algebra and Intermediate Algebra prepare students to take college-level math courses by teaching them the necessary skills so that they may be successful when they do enroll in a college-level mathematics course.
Eastern also offers a Corequisite math course that can be taken along with a college-level math course in the same semester. The Corequisite math course helps students succeed by giving them dedicated time to get one-on-one help from a math instructor. The Corequisite course can be taken in place of the Intermediate Algebra course for students who qualify.

The CAAP examination is a mid-level assessment taken by sophomore/junior students nationwide. The math portion tests knowledge in algebra, trigonometry, and calculus and is scaled from 40 to 80. The national average in recent years has been 56.3, while a score of 56 represents the 53rd percentile.
In each of the last two cycles, we have tested 180 graduating/transferring students. This is about 60% of the potential number we could test. After deleting math scores for students who did not take College Algebra, 2001年的平均分是56分.6; in 2002 it was 56.4. Both numbers are above the national average. In 2001, 68% scored a 56 or better; in 2002, the number was 58%.
